TECH
We leverage the computing power of bacteria.

We turn bacteria into in vivo testing assays for virtually any target metabolite. This technology, which we like to call “bacterial computers” is based on microorganisms’ natural capacity to gather and process information about its surroundings. This computer-like function has been overlooked for many years, and never before has there been an initiative that harnesses such capacity. By giving this natural functionality both a purpose and a human interface, we can turn bacteria into information gathering machines, capable of expressing their findings to human users by simple organoleptic changes. Kaitek aims to become a reference in R&D&I in biotechnology both at national and international level, and a pioneer in bacterial computing and environmental biosensors.

STORY
Kaitek labs was founded on 2013 by Emilia Díaz in Santiago, Chile.

The team started with Cristóbal Aller and Felipe Varea. On 2015 they were joined by Carol Helbig and are currently looking to expand our talent pool to continue growing. The company has the support of the Chilean government through CORFO, granting Kaitek U$D 350K for the development of their product. The project has been awarded many prizes both in national and international contests, including BYU’s “IBMC” (USA, 2015), AAAS’s “GIST” (Morocco, 2014), Copec-UC’s “Aplica tu idea” (Chile, 2014), Emprende UC’s “Jump” (Chile, 2012) totaling over U$D 50K in prize money in three years.

IDEOLOGY

We're looking to have the most positive social impact we can, through the application of science and technology to real world problems in underserved niches. We believe scientists have a social role to play in their local communities, and that research can and should always impact positively in the lives of people. We believe in sustainability, equality, and science and entrepreneurship as a tools for social development. Kaitek is proudly based in Chile, and we hope our efforts can help bring visibility to the amazing scientific and entrepreneurial talent our country contains.

NAME
The name Kaitek comes from the yagán tongue.

They inhabited Patagonia for thousands of years, and spent most of their lives at sea. Like is the case with most native people from our country, the last yagán has passed away, and their language is on the verge of oblivion. We want to carry their legacy by working in connection with their home, the sea, and with one of their most beautiful words – Kaitek, or light. We want to always maintain a connection to our roots and hope that one day we will become a beacon of light from the so called end of the world.

PEOPLE

We aim to become a reference in R&D+i in biotechnology both at a national and international level. We believe in the interdisciplinary nature of entrepreneurship and science; our objective is to bring them together to solve real world problems.

RED TIDE DETECTION KIT
The Red Tide Detection Kit developed by our team will provide a fast and easy way to
identify water and seafood poisoned by red tide toxins.
It’s based on a marine toxin biosensor – a genetically engineered cell culture capable of sensing the presence of a target toxin and changing its color accordingly. The use of our product will diminish and hopefully
prevent the risk of intoxication and death
derived from the consumption of contaminated seafood, while also averting the associated economic loss.

Experiments for startups, at startup rates

We know firsthand how hard it can be for startups in life sciences and biotech to go from their initial idea to a prototype stage, considering most projects do not have the necessary infrastructure and human resources when they are starting out. This is why we have opened a new line of business to offer laboratory services for startups, at startup-friendly prices. We provide initial lab development services, biochemical and molecular analysis, and consultancy services in biotechnology and biobusiness.

The technology we are developing – and the new approach we believe we bring to problem solving through biotech – have more applications that we can think of. We welcome new challenges with open arms.
