Toxic and safe shellfish look the same and taste the same. We turn bacteria into in vivo testing assays to check them onsite, assuring the safety of shellfish lovers worldwide. This technology, which we like to call “bacterial computers” is based on microorganisms’ natural capacity to gather and process information about its surroundings. By giving this functionality both a purpose and a human interface, we can turn bacteria into information gathering machines, capable of expressing their findings to human users by simple visual changes. Starting with red tide, we at Kaitek want to learn from Nature how to solve for Society.
Kaitek was one of the first synbio companies in our country, initially supported by the Chilean government through CORFO. Kaitek has been was awarded numerous prizes and recognitions including IncubaUC’s High Tech contest (2012), EmprendeUC’s Jump Chile (2012), AAA’S GIST (Morocco 2014), Copec-UC’s Aplica tu idea (2014), BYU’S International Business Model Competition (USA 2015), among others. We have been part of Singularity University’s GSP class of 2015, and of Rebel Bio’s 4th Cohort this 2017. We aim to create groundbreaking tech and put a spotlight in the so-called end of the world, carrying a word from the yaganes of Patagonia to remind us of this: Kaitek, or light.
From new applications of our current technology to expedite biochemical analysis and bio-innovation consultancies, we welcome new challenges with open arms. If you are a company looking to innovate in areas that can profit from biotechnology, like extraction industries, environmental-oriented processes and food safety, we have much to talk about. From needfinding to initial R&D, we are constantly looking out for opportunities to collaborate with traditional companies.
We know firsthand how hard it can be for startups in life sciences and biotech to go from their initial idea to a prototype stage, considering most projects do not have the necessary infrastructure and human resources when they are starting out. This is why we want to provide a space and support for new businesses, at at startup-friendly prices. We work with our proprietary lean biotech development methodology, selecting key experiments along with our mentored startups to accelerate their business with minimal spending, in a pay-as-you-use format.
